People not familiar with D&D lore might interpret this as a cave troll, remembering LotR. I'm not sure if this is your concern.

This melee attack is a gore attack (+4 attack, 3d10 + 4 damage). So far, being a player and DM of the playtest, I like the direction DnDNext is heading. I see a lot of good debates as I have also played since I was 10 to 12, and now 40, so I can respect the angst at what may come. I will say this though. 4e was simple to set encounters for simple beat downs of the monsters if you didn't modify and add a monster or two. Sometimes, even more. Maybe when the system first came out, it was different. However, once many variations of characters, the many many...

I have to say, as a long-time DM, I absolutely love DnDNext. All you've done, for our group at least, is taken the exact way we play, and gotten rid of all the garbage from every edition into a simplified bounded accuracy. Provided you completely leave level-based stat scaling out of the equation (aside from damage:hp), you have our entire hoard of geeks eagerly awaiting full-blown content =)

I must say I am so happy with what I have read so far. There are some issues that need to be addressed - The magic (cantrips are a great idea but just too powerful) and dying ( way too difficult to kill a character - there is very little threat). Please do can you now overhaul the public play adopted by WOTC. Hiding D&D in game shops will do as much harm to D&D as this new addition will help it. WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPREAD THE WORD TO GAME GROUPS, SCHOOLS and PUBLIC EVENTS.

I like having some example unique items pre-made in the books. Especially some throw-backs and classics. But they're usually more of a jumping off point for me. I like to design my own items and I don't particularly care for rules (and a chapter thereof) to tell me how to do it "the right way". I generally disregard these rules and generate my ideas. My players enjoy the weapons, items, and artifact I create, and that's the important part. I work hard to make balanced items that don't break...

First off, I like the Hit Dice mechanics for healing, and don’t have a problem with how HP’s are gained each level. Those are fine, but I think some of the other posters are right, just call ‘Hit Dice’ used for natural healing something else (surges, first aid, recovery dice, etc).
‘Hit Points’, as defined by M.Mearls, raises my hackles. Actually, it’s just a different way of saying ‘Wound Points’ and ‘Vitality Points’ like the Star Wars games. Which I liked, and they worked well, but...

Having read through the playtest material, I have discovered that the "reliability" of the rogue is only useful for rogues with low ability scores. According to the playtest material, you get an automatic success (normally) if your ability score is 5 higher than the DC. So if you look at a Rogue with a 24 Dex, his mod is 6, so he can never get lower than a 16, but he automatically succeeds on DC 19. Yet, a Rogue with a 10 Dex will never have less than a 10, but can only automatically succeed on...

Except then You have to sacrifice your background and specialty choices just to approximate that class, rather than having an equal ability to explore different stories within the class as the Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, and Wizard do.
      NO WAY.

I think in relation to paragraph 2 above, it would be awesome if a paladin had martial dice to use but instead of straight damage they could be used to provide effects based on deity choice. For example: I follow the edicts of a god of healing and as an option I can spend a martial die on a hit allowing the party member with the lowest HP to gain HP equal to a given modifier.

Secondary Splat content has already always been optional...as is any rule in D&D anyway.
I use Crit/fumble rules, but I color My fumbles by making a player or Me, back up the fumble with a 2nd d20 roll. On a 20, its just a miss and end of turn, 6-19 you grant combat advantage and end of turn, also Miss effects don't go off that normally would, on a 2-5 a 'Bad effect' happens such as dropped weapon, bow string breaks, chance to hit an ally instead, and on another 1, something "Really...

It would be like the list of defenses, one of the few things I loved about 4th ed PCs. Although I think there should be a defense or save connected to each ability score, and the save derived from INT should be used vs. illusions (which would be a little like 2nd ed. where...

no-one actually likes fourth edition that has played any of the previous editions.
      March 6, 2012 2:18 PM PST
Completely untrue. I have played all the editions and I like 4th edition quite a lot. My favorite edition is probably still 3.5, though I play a lot more 4e these days, along with non-WOTC games (Savage Worlds most prominently among them).
