    Behind the Game, Slogging Ahead

    Thursday, June 30, 2011, 7:00 PM

    I'm running a game. Eventually.

We finally met. Most of us anyways. We're going to play 4E. Two of them have their character ideas. DH (darling husband in knitlister termenology) is thinking about what he wants to play. One is in the process of moving after the breakup that disrupted our last games. And now we're in the height of mid-summer 'it's warm let's do stuff' schedule conflicts, so I should have plenty of time to get a decent portion of the Temple of Elemental Evil updated. I've started looking at replacing gods, picking classes and races of NPCs and I've written the giant frogs in 4E terms.

I've been writing encounters for both 4 and 5 party members. I have 4 players, but they might hire an NPC. The 4E DMG actually makes writing monsters easier than ever. I might post them later. At some point, if people stop scheduling every minute of every weekend of the summer, we might even play.

    Behind the screen again....

You know how it is. You're playing in a weekly alternating game (D&D one week Shadowrun the next) and Real Life happens. The people hosting the game split up and now its been 3 weeks since my gaming fix.  Which, I realize is a very selfish attitude. I feel bad that they broke up, but I can't help but wonder, what will happen to the minis I painted for them?

Hopefully said games will come back. I get attached to my characters. I really do. Until then, I guess it's time to pull up the big girl pants and run my own game.  Eep.

Here is the train of thoughts about the game over the last 3 weeks:

    • I'll run 3.5, I have stuff ready to go.
    • Hubby digs out 2E modules that came before Return to Temple of Elemental Evil, such as Temple of Elemental Evil, and the 2 follow up books.
    • Updating requires work.
    • Start reading modules, I'm gonna do this!
    • 3.5, update to 4E, 3.5, update to 4E (about 10 times a day)
    • e-mail with players, wait for responses
    • Watch Conan the Barbarian
    • wait
    • e-mail players
    • wait
    • dig out old Dungeon mags
    • Watch Conan the Destroyer
    • Set up meeting and bake cake for people who do not show up. (Real Life is being a pain to said players, so I can't really take offense.)
    • Nobody has 3.5E but me, so I guess its 4E.
    • I need to make a stinking decision.

So here I am, eating ramen and looking for hope on the D&D site.

Its time to read the DMG4E, pick a setting and start updating. Gee I wish they'd start including a section in the DMG about updating old modules to current edition. Then again, I'm lazy and I know it.

    Time to get to work.
