Yep - a disgrace that those of us on other continents are excluded. The Gencon attendees can keep the minis, put the pdf of GoDC up on drivethrurpg to allow the rest of us to share!

I don't think 'next' is ready for print. They've still got a lot to do, and I (personally) don't like 5e as it is now, according to the latest playtest packet. I want more 4e in it (even as optional modules) And I want more classes, races, and a few campaign worlds. They need to bring in more than just FR, and should make up a totally NEW campaign world, just for 5e. I'll still play 4e until they are ready. Then, I might give 5e a try. I figure they're shooting for a release date that coincides...

Don't know who is their PR "specialist" but they are gathering a lot of anger from 4e supporters.

I'm so happy to see Chris, Wil, Scott, Mike and Jerry back but it also confirms how crappy Next is.
Thankfully the players - and DM - are really personable because the game itself is rather boring. Look at Jim Darkmagic: he's gone from being really interesting mechanically to a one-trick pony. Wil's character has gone from tossing out rerolls to a character that has to go back to a basic attack to do anything. Who would believe an oath of enmity now takes an entire minute to come into...

The important part for any undead is a focus on the "rule of three". Why are they undead. What is their desire. How do they naturally expire. Zombies, skeletons, and ghouls are most often times made by necromancers, gods or very corrupt magical areas. Their desires are what their master bids or wonton destruction and death "mindless murder" being the key. They all expire when the magic or power that made them expires. Vampires liches are different in that they either choose or resolve that...

If a Wight or Wraith kills a living being that being becomes a Wight or Wraith but it does NOT have the ability to create any more of its kind. AKA they are a lesser Wight or Wraith. It keeps the threat of being turned into something so horrible but stops the perpetuation craziness.

Lots of things were broken about it, but tons of people absolutely *loved* it anyway, because but made it practical to achieve all sorts of character concepts you could never have made otherwise. So if they can design an *optional* system that has built in mechanics for fixing game balance issues while still giving folks the things they love about having that flexibility, as far as I'm concerned, that's the best of both worlds.
But already in Next, you can do a lot of things with...

Actually, with separate advancement rules for multiclass characters, it sounds like a compromise with hybrids -- much more flexible than just playing a hybrid (you many more degrees you can use to balance your mixture of classes), but much more level-scaled than 3E, which resembles a hybrid.

Why is 2E never mentioned? I prefer it instead of 3.5's complexity and 4E's mandatory minis or 1E. Please WoTC, at least sell the electronic versions of 2E and mention them in future comparisons

While I understand that mechanically-wise 1st and 2nd Edition of AD&D are close, I still ressent that they sometime completely forget it existed. For example last week, they spoka about the beholder; the version (illustration wise) i prefer is the 2e fleshy Jeff Easley one but it didn't get a mention while we got many of they spiky ones :(

Overall our take on the key features missing from clerics is stronger linkage to their patron diety. It is the real defining characteristic of the cleric and indeed the Paladin, that they are earthly representatives of a transcendant power.
To keep things simple keep the core spells but up power the domain or domains and/or add a Dedicated to XXXX patch, or specialty that includes additional follow in the divine path options. Our local games have a strong sense of the presence of the...

If you are thinking of rogues in the 2nd edition sense as Thief, re-named for political correctness, then I agree with what you're saying.
But let me give (what I hope is) a good reason to have a skill-focused, character that isn't necessarily a two-bit thief as a playable niche... the renaming of rogue from the idea of being a character that behaves in an aberrant way. Plenty of classes represent the warrior type: Monks, Fighters, Barbarians, Plenty of wizard types (Sorcerer, Warlock,...

I guess I'm the only one who feels this way about the short rest, healing surge or whatyamacallit, but here's how it seems to play out in my mind...
"Fytee the Fighter, having held off Ugg the Ogre in a vicious exchange of blows draws back and is suddenly joined by his trusty companions. Wizzy the Wizard points his finger, and with a word of power causes the ogre to ignite into a screaming ball of fire. Rowan the Rogue, seeing the panicked and blazing giant charge forward, leaps in the...

Did rule of three go away because this one is a total disaster or because people stopped asking questions?

Actually even on a tactical level (Ie goblins/kobolds at first level and battle strategy): Due to ability to make your own monsters DnD is much more replayable then you give credit for.
On a story level so long as your party doesn't fall into ruts of copy characters, then the storyline is continually different too.

If you do a $200 boxed set I would buy it IF it were full of stuff. Warhammer 3rd edition was $100 and had about $30 worth of product. I won't be buying anymore of their overpriced stuff ever again. You best move would be a $15-20 boxed set. Just like the original red box. A basic rulebook with a module and dice.

Roleplaying and adventuring is teamplay so other characters should have problem with ones that want to rest after 5mins of adventuring.
Easiest irl examples for 5min workday are:
      You are doing a project...
      You are working...
You are playing a team based sport...
...and have one person to join you who is really good at what you are doing, but she's such a primadonna or slacker that she'll only write really good A4/works for 5mins/gets score or two for your team and then...

I'm not sure the goal here is actually to eliminate the five-minute work day. Character power levels have to be balanced around something. To me, Mearls' initiative seems to be an essential response to the challenge of the FMWD, in that it can come about irregardless of the number or strength of encounters the players undertake. By considering opponents' power levels over a universal measure which affects all characters, the day, he is attempting to minimize the effect of play style on...

I like your suggestion about diminishing returns upon recharging, although it might be hard to keep track of that stuff. However, "hit points used to power dailies" doesn't work well with their current system where HP are basically used to fight monsters. Using surges to power either HP or spells sounds more like it, though.
I also wish WotC would do more to fix vancian casting (the actual problem) rather than pile more and more bandaids on top.

I am an old school gamer (circa 1980) as well. My ratio of running-to-playing is about 2:1. I totally agree with you, for what that is worth.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but have you seen Roll 20 (www.roll20.net)? It's a system-agnostic VTT complete with customizable built-in dice roller, support for decks of cards, and video chat.

As much as I love seeing GURPS bragged on (it's versatility is the main reason why it's our go-to game), best I recall what they actually said was that they wanted 5e to support the playstyles of every previous edition. That's completely different from saying they will support every style of play.
      --------------------
On to marco's question about the big three model: we're mostly GN hybrids and could care less about simulationism, and GURPS fits us perfectly even though it's definitely...

All I want is a wizard that doesn't use vancian casting. That's still all I want. Don't give me a sorcerer or something else - I'd like a wizard, please. Sans vancian.
      July 3, 2012 12:15 PM PDT
But the wizard isn't a D&D wizard if he doesn't use Vancian casting. I have been playing wizards since the dawn of "Eldritch Wizardry" and I wouldn't have them any other way.
If they change the mechanic then change the name, it isn't a true wizard.
