I had a good time and enjoyed seeing/challenging the different kinds of Modern decks out there.
I didn't do very well, I won a third of my games before dropping to booster draft with friends.
Since it was my first competitive tournament, I wanted to create my own deck. I hoped this would be totally different than anything the other players would be expecting and catch some players by surprise. Plus initially, I was trying to make a competetive Modern deck that didn't cost much to assemble. It obviously didn't work out that perfectly on both points... But, I still present to you, "750 Auras".
Main Deck
60 cards
2 Breeding Pool
2 Forest
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Temple Garden
2 Verdant Catacombs
---------------
12 lands
4 Arbor Elf
4 Aura Gnarlid
4 Kor Spiritdancer
4 Noble Hierarch
1 Rafiq of the Many
---------------
17 creatures
4 Abundant Growth
1 Commune with Nature
4 Curiosity
3 Distortion Strike
3 Hyena Umbra
4 Keen Sense
4 Spider Umbra
4 Utopia Sprawl
4 Vines of Vastwood
---------------
31 other spells
Sideboard
1 Distortion Strike
1 Hyena Umbra
4 Invisible Stalker
4 Path to Exile
4 Qasali Pridemage
1 Ranger's Guile
---------------
15 sideboard cards
- After extensive testing 11.5 lands seemed to be just right, but until I can somehow get half a card into the deck, I guess it will stay at 12 lands.
- The ideal opening hand is any 1 land plus at least 2 more mana sources beyond the land, preferably not another land. Then either a Kor Spiritdancer
(plus a Distortion Strike
) or an Aura Gnarlid
. The rest should be auras.
- The sideboard was what I didn't put much testing or thought into. I would like to take out the Ranger's Guile
and Distortion Strike
, and probably move more of the Hyena Umbra
into the sidboard. Then add some combination of 4 Spirit Link
in the main deck and sideboard instead. I've also been going back and forth on whether it should be Rafiq of the Many
or just a Double Cleave
in the deck.
and
Human deck once again. I guess I'll have to try hard next time not to simply make yet another Human deck. I'm most excited about this flavor of deck, but I guess I had better move on...
human (and human sacrificing) deck.
and came out with a deck that I was less sure of than I had hoped upon initially seeing the card pool.
spirit and human deck. Hopefully all the flying creatures and tricky spirits would make up for what looks to be some slow starts for the deck. I feel like I probably should have added another land to the deck, but I couldn't decide what to cut.
